In a Haitian national team dominated by players from the diaspora who ply their trade in Europe and North America, one name stands out for a different reason: Olivier Woodensky Pierre.
The 21-year-old defensive midfielder is the only member of Haiti’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad who currently plays his club football in Haiti. Pierre turns out for Violette Athletic Club in the Ligue Haïtienne, proudly representing the domestic game on the biggest stage in world football.
Born on December 30, 2004, in Cité Soleil, Pierre has risen through the ranks of Haitian football with determination and consistency. Standing at 1.80m with a strong right foot, he operates primarily as a defensive midfielder, bringing steel, composure, and tactical discipline to the Grenadiers’ engine room.
While most of his teammates benefit from the superior infrastructure and competitive level of foreign leagues, Pierre’s selection is a powerful symbol of hope and pride for Haitian football at home. His presence in the squad reminds fans that talent can still emerge and thrive from the local championship, even in challenging circumstances.
Coach Sébastien Migné’s decision to include Pierre highlights the young midfielder’s quality and potential. As Haiti prepares for its third appearance at a World Cup and its first since 1974 Woodensky Pierre carries not only the expectations of a nation but also the dreams of every young player still competing in Haiti’s domestic league.
